You may have noticed a lot of brands are now offering really long belts that need to be trimmed in order to fit. There's good reason for this as it allows you to achieve a perfect custom fit - which is especially useful if you find yourself in-between standard sizes.
But how do we get our really long belt to fit properly? In a perfect world we would all have a cobbler next door so we could just run the belt over and have him measure and cut it for us.
We know that is not always possible in the real world so we've created a short guide to help you cut your belt for a perfect fit. And don't worry, it is actually quite quick and easy to do.
---
To start, feed the belt through the loops of pants - ideally the same type of pants you intend to wear the belt with. (ie. don't do this wearing jeans if you intend to wear the belt with dress pants).
Pull your pants up to where you normally wear them and feed the end of the belt through the buckle and pull until the belt feels comfortably snug. Then measure the distance from the where the peg of the buckle touches the belt to the centre hole. Write this measurement down as this is amount we are going to cut off the other end of the belt.
Loosen the screw with a screwdriver and remove the buckle and leather loop and put them all in a safe place (especially that screw!).
Use the previously measured length to mark the point where the belt strap will be cut.
If you haven't done so already, double check your measurements. Take a deep breath and cut the strap where you marked it.
Take the piece of excess leather and line up the end with the end of your freshly cut belt and mark the position of the hole you will need to make.
Once you know where you need to make the hole and you have a leather punch handy this step is as simple as punching the hole.
If you don't have a leather punch most Swiss Army knives come equipped with an awl which will do the job adequately. Failing that, you can use a knife or even a large nail to make the hole.
After the hole has been successfully made it is time to put your new belt back together . When you're putting the screw back don't forget to attach the bit of leather that keeps the belt loop from sliding off the end.
Mission accomplished! You're now ready to conquer the world in your new belt!
